They call German Shepherds Velcro dogs, because once you have one, they are stuck to you like Velcro. Having owned several magnificent German shepherds in my life, I have to say that it’s true. In the almost three years that we have had Alli, I don’t think I’ve gone to the bathroom by myself here at home more than a time or two. And then only when she was at the dog groomer’s or outside playing in the yard.
Like all German shepherds, she is an excellent watchdog, and she is on duty 24/7. Nothing gets past her, whether it’s a vehicle pulling into our driveway, the mailman stopping at the box out on the street, or a suspicious paper bag blowing across the yard. Yesterday she let me know that a pinecone fell off a tree six blocks away.
Terry’s cats like to get on the bed at night. I don’t have any problem with that except they don’t just get up there and lie down. They walk all over the bed, including us, nestle in for a couple of minutes, then walk all over us some more. I’m a light sleeper, and that does not work for me. A few months ago, I said I was really tired of the darn cats keeping me awake at night, and I guess Alli knew what she must do. She lays down on her doggy bed in our bedroom when we retire for the night, but she doesn’t stay there long because she’s busy keeping the cats away from our bed. If one of them approaches it, she gets in front of them and chases them away.
But that doesn’t mean she can’t be downright silly once in a while. When I’m working, she spends most of her time in the office with me, except for going to check on Terry several times during the day. Sometimes when I’m writing, I have to stop and look at the crazy antics she gets up to. Now tell me, doesn’t she look like a fierce family protector in this picture? What a goofy girl.
