A couple of weeks ago I got an email from our State Farm insurance agent offering us a free Ting sensor and free monitoring service. Having never heard of a Ting thing, I had to do some research on it, and after I did, I was happy to say, “Sure, send me one.”
A Ting is a small device measuring about 4 inches high and maybe 3 inches wide that plugs into a standard 3-prong home electrical outlet and monitors your home’s wiring, plugged-in devices and appliances, and even the power from your utility provider for fire hazards. It requires the free Ting phone app, and if any kind of problem is detected, the homeowner is contacted by email, phone, and/or text to alert them so they can have an electrician come out and remedy the problem before a fire occurs. I understand several insurance companies are providing them to their clients because it’s cheaper for them to do that than to cover the cost for a house fire.
Downloading the app was easy, and then all I had to do was plug the Ting in and connect it to our WiFi system. Quick and easy, and one more way to keep ourselves and our home safe and secure.
If your insurance company does not provide a Ting, you can order it from Amazon at the highlighted link. The cost is $99, which includes 12 months of monitoring. I think that’s a small price to pay for the protection it provides.
