Like most people who heard the news, when I saw the headline that Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer had been stabbed to death yesterday, I found it hard to believe. And even harder when the People Magazine website said that their son Nick was the assailant. Reiner, who was best known as Archie Bunker’s son-in-law, Meathead, on the All in the Family sitcom, went on to be a celebrated film director with such hits as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men.
Between that, the news of the shooting at Brown University, and the massacre of Jews celebrating Hanukkah in Australia, sometimes you have to wonder what this world is coming to. But I guess our parents, grandparents, and ancestors back through time said the same thing more than once. I found it interesting that the man who took down one of the killers in Australia was a Muslim. Not everybody is a bad guy, no matter what their race, religion, or anything else would lead some people to believe.
Enough of world events. Let’s talk about writing, because that’s what’s been occupying most of my time lately. Yesterday was definitely a good writing day. I got in over 5,600 words, two more chapters for my book Big Lake Parolee. Right now, I’m getting close to 68,000 words, and while I wouldn’t say the end is near, it’s not that far away. I hope to get at least one or two more chapters written today.
We have a couple of appointments this week. Terry has a doctor’s appointment tomorrow afternoon, and the next day we have a follow-up appointment at Blue Ridge Pet Clinic for Alli. Besides that, I don’t plan to be doing much between now and Christmas except writing.
