Worth Waiting For

As I said in yesterday’s blog, Terry made cinnamon rolls for Kenny and Tiffany on Sunday as a reward for all their hard work helping us get our house ready for the insurance inspection. While Tiffany has had the rolls several times over the years, Kenny never had, although he had heard about them ever since he and Tiffany got together. He was definitely ready to experience them himself.

And who wouldn’t be? The first step in making the rolls is making the dough and rolling it out. Then Terry puts brown sugar, raisins, and crushed walnuts on top.

She rolls everything together and puts the dough in a bowl to rise for about an hour. Then she rolls the dough out, forms it into rolls, puts them in a pan and lets them rise for half an hour to 45 minutes. Terry says she doesn’t really time them, she just knows that when it’s ready it’s ready.

Then they go into the oven for 35 to 40 minutes. They come out looking absolutely delicious, but she’s not done yet. The final step is icing them, and then they’re ready to serve. Kenny said they were definitely worth waiting for, and he’s right. I do have to clarify here that these weren’t actually cinnamon rolls, because Kenny said he’s not fond of cinnamon, so Terry left that ingredient out of her regular recipe. She tells me she made them more like sticky buns, with extra filling in the bottom of the pan Whatever she wants to call them, I call them yummy. We have been on the go so much that we decided yesterday was going to be more of a laid-back day. Terry paid a couple of bills online, then we watched Season 1 of Kevin Costner’s three-hour epic western, Horizon. It was good if you don’t mind a lot of violence and gore. However, that was how the Old West was settled, back in the day.

Another movie we watched on Netflix over the weekend was The Six Triple Eight, the true story of an all-black Women’s Army Corps unit during World War II that was sent to Europe to deal with a huge backlog of mail from and to GIs and the folks back home. Other units had tried to solve the problem unsuccessfully, and nobody expected the 6888 Mail Battalion to do any better. In fact, they were given six months to accomplish their task, and not only did no one believe they could do it, they had to deal with all kinds of roadblocks put up by the military establishment, which was not ready to admit that women could handle such a mess, let alone black women.

The unit was given six months to prove they were up to the monumental job, but instead it only took them 90 days to get the mail flowing and into the hands of the people it was intended for. Like the saying goes, if you want a job done right, give it to a woman. And in this case to black women, who refused to let prejudice and misogyny stand in the way of their success. Terry and I agree it was one of the best movies we’ve seen in a very long time. If you get the chance, watch it.
