Something’s Always Going On

It seems like we never have time to get bored because there’s always something going on around here. Yesterday, Terry and I had appointments with our new primary care provider, and we both like her very much. She’s one of those relaxed, very competent people who make you feel from the get-go that she’s capable of handling whatever our needs might be.

When we finished there, we ran to Lowe’s to pick up a few things, including a 2-wheeled wheelbarrow. I already have a regular wheelbarrow, but after son-in-law Kenny showed me his “old man’s wheelbarrow” and how easy it was to use, I knew I had to have one for this old man. While we were there, we also bought a couple more chairs for our back deck.

From there we stopped at Walgreens to pick up a prescription, and when we got home, Kenny, Tiffany, and their son Travis were there ahead of us. In our absence, Kenny had set up our Dillon Square Deal reloading press and was cranking out ammunition.

This was his first time ever reloading, but he did a great job on a bunch of 9mm pistol ammo. We will definitely have to try some of it out this weekend.

Everybody was hungry, so while Travis went home, Tiffany and Kenny went with us to Pizza Factory for dinner. Their white pizza is delicious and one of my favorites. When we finished eating, we went to Cal Ranch and Terry got a bale of bedding straw to put on the strawberry plants and herbs she had planted a couple of days ago.

Tiffany and Kenny didn’t stay long when we got back to the house because they both have to get up early to go to work today. After they left, Terry and I spent some time watering the plants in the front and back yards and in the greenhouse. Like I said, there’s always something going on around here.

It’s Thursday, so it’s time for a new Free Drawing. This week’s prize is a hardcover copy of Ballad Of The Green Beret by Marc Leeson. Young people of my generation are no strangers to Army Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler’s The Ballad of the Green Berets, honoring the Special Forces soldiers he served with in Vietnam. It was the Billboard Top 100 single in 1966, outperforming songs by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. But the handsome soldier’s public persona hid a darker reality in which alcohol, women, failed relationships, and violence reigned. In Tennessee, Sadler was charged with killing a man who had been involved with his ex-girlfriend. After being acquitted on grounds of self-defense, he left the country and became a gunrunner in Central America, was involved with various guerrilla groups, and consumed booze like some people would water. In an attack that still shrouded in mystery, in 1988 he was shot in the head and severely injured while in Guatemala and died a year later. Leeson’s book pulls no punches telling the story of this American hero’s rise to fame and how it all came crashing down around him.
