A Wet, Wordy Weekend

I don’t know how much rain we got between Friday and last night, but it seemed like it was quite a bit. There were a couple of real thunder boomers when it poured, and other times there was no more than a drizzle broken up by periods of partial cloudiness. It was a good weekend to get some writing done, and I did.

In the last three days I did somewhere around 12,000 words total, and I think my new Big Lake book is about to round the final curve and head for the home stretch. Of course, that depends on my characters. They may have other ideas that I don’t know about yet. They seem to enjoy waiting to surprise me at the last minute.

Quite a few readers have asked me why more of my books are not available as audiobooks. The main reason for that is the high cost of production and the low return I’ve seen from audiobooks. Good narrators are expensive and hard to find, and it takes many hours of narrating and then many more hours of reviewing and asking for corrections. Not to mention the cost and time involved in creating a cover for an audiobook, all before a book comes out. I have yet to break even on one. As I’ve said before, I know some authors who do very well with audiobooks. I’m just not one of them.

However, Amazon has approached me and several other authors I know about using their new AI generated narration service. In the past, nothing I’ve heard that has been AI generated has been worth wasting time with, but I did listen to a couple of samples from Amazon, and I must say that it’s a big improvement. Once I get this new Big Lake book out, I may spend some time investigating further.

Congratulations Don MacAllister, winner of our drawing for an RV camping journal donated by Barbara House. Barbara makes several variations of these, and they all have pages where you can list the date, weather, where you traveled to and from that day, beginning and ending mileage, campground information including amenities at RV sites, a place for campground reviews, room to record activities, people met along the way, reminders of places to see and things to do the next time you’re in the area, and a page for notes for each day.

We had 27 entries this time around. Stay tuned, a new contest starts soon. Note: Due to the high shipping cost of printed books and Amazon restrictions on e-books to foreign countries, only entries with US addresses and e-mail addresses are allowed. After 90 days, unclaimed prizes revert back to the drawing pool for a future contest.

And finally, here’s a chuckle to start your day from the collection of funny signs we see in our travels and that our readers share with us.

Thought For The Day – I’m thinking about joining the cicadas this summer and just screaming for six weeks.
