That’s A Big Flower!

A few months ago when Travis and Geli were helping plant Terry’s garden, they included a few sunflower seeds. Geli loves sunflowers and they have a bunch of them growing at their place. Terry was born in Kansas, the Sunflower State, so they are special to her, too.

Not all of the seeds they planted took, but a couple did, and one produced this flower which is well over six feet tall. That’s a big flower!

The temperature was still not too bad yesterday, so in the late afternoon we did some chores outside, including taking down the deer fence around Terry’s garden. The heat has prevented taking care of it like it should have been done and it’s become a jungle out there. But we weren’t able to get in with the mower to do much of anything due to the fence, so that had to come down.

I cut the zip ties holding the mesh plastic fencing from the fiberglass rods and metal fence posts supporting it while Terry mowed part of the garden. Then we rolled the fencing up to be used another time at our house or for Travis to use for one of his many projects.

If the heat isn’t too bad today or tomorrow, we will finish rolling up the fencing and get that out of the way. We also need to make a run into town to pick up a prescription at Walgreens and do some grocery shopping. There’s always something going on around here.

Congratulations Michael Diot, winner of our drawing for an audiobook of Hands of Onyx, book 2 in the Sav’ine series by Stacy Bender. It’s a story about cybernetic soldiers escorting a long haul space freighter to the outer rim planets, dealing with saboteurs who are trying to stop them and a crew that includes a half-blind medic, an explosives expert who is a sociopath, and an interrogator suffering from dementia. What could possibly go wrong?

We had 16 entries in this week’s contest. Stay tuned, a new drawing starts soon. Note: Due to the high shipping cost of printed books and Amazon restrictions on e-books and audiobooks to foreign countries, only entries with US addresses and e-mail addresses are allowed. After 90 days, unclaimed prizes revert back to the drawing pool for a future contest.

And finally, here’s a chuckle to start your day from the collection of funny signs we see in our travels and that our readers share with us.

  1. Love this billboard

  2. Great to learn Terry is a Kansan. From where in Kansas and so I assume you have visited the Sunflower state Where have you roamed on our prairie?

  3. Randy, Terry is an Air Force brat and was born in Newton while her dad was stationed there. In our 18+ years of fulltime RVing we were all over the country including many places in Kansas.

  4. Know Newton well. I started my newspaper career at nearby Hutchinson.
