Dorothy Was Right

I don’t remember how old I was the first time I saw The Wizard of Oz, but I know it scared the hell out of me. I mean, tornadoes, houses landing on top of people, witches, flying monkeys, a talking lion, and some guy behind a curtain bellowing out orders. I’m pretty sure I had nightmares for a week after that.

But you know what? In spite of all that, it turns out Dorothy was right. There’s no place like home!

We left Edgewater on February 1 for a month-long trip to Arizona, and got back home last night about 8 PM, exactly 4 weeks after we left. And after a month of sleeping in hotels and eating in restaurants, it sure was good to walk in the door of our home.

But before that, when we got to town we stopped for dinner at Stavros Pizza, then made a quick stop at Publix to pick up a couple of things. And you know what they say about most accidents happening within a few miles of home? Apparently that’s true, because less than a mile from our house, traffic on U.S. Highway 1 came to a sudden stop because of a bad wreck. Fortunately, we were able to detour around it and not have to sit there for a long time.

By the time we got the van unloaded and everything put away, we were both too tired to even think. So we parked ourselves in our recliners and watched TV for an hour or so, then took showers and went to bed. Today I don’t plan to do anything at all except try to catch up on a huge backlog of email, pay some bills online, and that’s about it. I told Terry I must be getting old, because there was a time when I could go for weeks at a time without stopping to catch a breath, but not anymore. Somewhere along the way, old caught up with me.

Today is your last chance to enter our new Free Drawing. This week’s prize is an audiobook of Birdsongs, the first book in my friend Jason Deas’ excellent Benny James mystery series. To enter, all you have to do is click on this Free Drawing link or the tab at the top of this page and enter your name in the comments section at the bottom of that page (not this one). Only one entry per person per drawing please, and you must enter with your real name. To prevent spam or multiple entries, the names of cartoon or movie characters are not allowed. The winner will be drawn this evening.

Thought For The Day – Don’t worry about getting old, worry about thinking old.
