One of the most frustrating things about being a homeowner here in Volusia County, Florida, is getting anybody to show up when you call a handyman or a repair person. They all advertise that they want the work, they all tell you how good they are and make you lots of promises about coming by to do a job, but 99% of the time you never hear from them again, or if you do, it could be days or even weeks later. Which means when I do find a reliable person, I treat them well and let them know how much I appreciate them.
A while back we contacted an outfit called Simmons Services to get an estimate for pressure washing and painting our house. They said they would be here at a certain time, and I was impressed because they showed up 15 minutes early. Ken Simmons and his wife Brittany are very nice people, and that same evening they emailed me an estimate, as promised.
Unfortunately, my health issues kicked in big time about then and I never got back to them until last Friday. I called Ken and told him we had to wait a while on the painting, but I did want to get the place pressure washed because it was looking pretty bad. He said he would be here Monday (yesterday) at 10 AM, and again he arrived a couple of minutes early.
Being as close to the water as we are, along with Florida’s high humidity everywhere, mildew becomes a real problem. When we bought our place three years ago I pressure washed it and got it looking pretty good, but since then my back has not allowed me to do it again. Ken went to work and did an excellent job on both the house and the garage.
I told him that I would give him a call sometime after the first of the year to get the place painted, and he told me that while he would not mind the business, in reality I would be throwing money away. Our place is completely vinyl sided, and Ken said that the paint would not adhere to the siding all that well in this environment, and that within a couple of years it would probably start peeling and need repainting again. He said the place looks good now, so just have it pressure washed every year or 18 months.
I don’t know about you, but that impresses the heck out of me. He could have not said a word and easily made a couple of thousand dollars off of me. But this is a man with integrity, something you don’t see a lot of these days. You can bet I will be hiring Ken again for other work we need around here. In fact, he’s coming back again in a couple of weeks to pressure wash our concrete driveway and parking area, which also has a lot of mildew that has accumulated over the years.
Thanks for being such a good guy, Ken, and you can bet I will spread the word far and wide.
In other news, my new book, Dead Romeos, is off to an impressive start. It already has four five-star reviews, and as of midnight last night it was ranked at #3,214 of all 3.4 million e-books on Amazon. That’s pretty impressive for a book that’s only been out just over 24 hours. I appreciate everybody who has purchased the book, told their friends about it, posted links to it on Facebook, and left reviews. You all mean a lot to me.
