It’s Done!

As I had hoped, I finished my new book, Big Lake Ninja, yesterday afternoon. I started it on May 1st and finished June 30, exactly two months later. It might have been done sooner but we took a week or so off to visit my son and his wife in Alabama during that time. You know what they say about all work and no play. And I do love to play! The book came in just a little shy of 81,000 words, and today I will give it a final once over and then print it out so Terry can begin the editing and proofing process.

People are already asking me what my next project will be. The next book will be Dead Romeos, the seventh book in my John Lee Quarrels mystery series. If all goes according to plan (does anything ever go according to plan?), it should be out in early September. I try to release four new books a year, and this is my second one for this year, so I’m on track.

I know some authors that turn out twice as many books as I do in a year, sometimes more, and I know some authors that are lucky to get one book out a year. We all have our own schedules, our own way of doing things, and our own lives that need attention occasionally. I always tell other authors to do what’s right for them and to work at their own pace, whether it be faster or slower than mine.

While I was doing all of that, Miss Terry was wrapping up our month-end paperwork and making a delicious roasted chicken dinner. I swear that woman could take an old tennis shoe and some of her herbs and spices and make a meal fit for a king out of it! Did I mention the homemade from scratch fruit cheesecake we had for dessert?

Sometime between the time I finished the book and dinner we managed to slip out to the garage and play two games of darts. I don’t know what happened, but for some reason Lady Luck was smiling at me and I won both times. That helps ease the bruised ego from when Terry handily beat me and our buddy Jim two games in a row the day before. Sometimes you’re the windshield and sometimes you’re the bug.

Besides printing out the new book for Terry to work on, I’ve got a few errands to run today, and then I will work on the latest edition of my author’s newsletter. Tomorrow afternoon I have an appointment at the VA Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Since it’s just a few blocks away from Hibachi Grill & Supreme Buffet, I may allow Terry to twist my arm and make me go there for dinner. It’s our responsibility to support them and keep them in business, right? Though I sometimes wonder when they see me waddling through the door if they fear their entire day’s profits might be eaten up, quite literally.

Congratulations Katy Smith, winner of our drawing for an audiobook of Stillborn Armadillos, the first book in my John Lee Quarrels series. We had 70 entries this time around. Stay tuned, a new contest starts soon.

Thought For The Day – There is a reason the rearview mirror is so small and the windshield is so big. Where you are going is more important than where you come from.
