15 Books Every RVer Needs

It’s no secret that I love books. I love reading them and I love writing them. Even with the wealth of knowledge available on the internet, there are still a lot of great RVing books that should be on your bookshelf, or in your Kindle. And even with a gazillion apps for RVers, there are times when you can’t get online, and yes (gasp), your GPS will lie to you! Being the author of several RV books myself, I’m very impressed with what so many of my peers have turned out. Here are fifteen RV books I feel every RVer should have.

The Next Exit– What kind of services can you find at the next exit off the highway? Gas, food, camping, shopping? Is there big rig access? Keep this book handy, you will use it often.

Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas – Designed for truckers but invaluable for anyone who drives a big rig, this guide includes detailed coverage of state-designated truck routes and other highways suitable for large vehicles.

Best RV Tips from RVTipOfTheDay.com – Whether you’re a fulltimer, a snowbird, or a weekend camper, you will find tips here that will make your travels easier, safer and more enjoyable. You will find tips on getting your mail while traveling, internet access, boondocking, and how to save money on camping fees, to name just some of what this book holds in store for you.

Mountain Directory – There is an East and West edition of this important guide to mountain passes across the country, and anybody driving a big RV would be a fool not to have both. They tell you mile by mile what to expect going both uphill and downhill. Forewarned is forearmed!

So, You Want To Be An RVer? – I’ve mentioned this book by John and Kathy Huggins of Living The RV Dream fame many times because I believe it is probably the best resource of its kind for any new or veteran RVer.

Support Your RV Lifestyle! – My friend Jaimie Hall Bruzenak has been writing and speaking about the RV lifestyle for as long as I can remember, and her insider’s guide to working on the road is essential for anybody looking for information on earning money as they travel.

The Complete Book of Boondock RVing – A veteran RV writer and boondocker tells you how to equip your rig for boondocking, find great campsites, manage and conserve electricity and water, and live comfortably off the grid.

The Wright Guide to Camping With The Corps of Engineers– If you have not camped at a Corps of Engineers (COE) campground yet, you don’t know what you’ve been missing. COE campgrounds are usually roomy, comfortable, and offer many recreational opportunities. This excellent guide will tell you where they are and what they have to offer.

Managing 12 Volts – When we were building our bus conversion I found this guidebook invaluable and still refer to it when I need to troubleshoot something.

Beating the Odds – We were privileged to know the late Kay and Joe Peterson, founders of the Escapees RV Club, since our first months on the road as fulltime RVers. and this fascinating book about their lives was both inspiring and heartwarming. I’ve read it twice and enjoyed it as much or more the second time around.

Miss Terry’s Kitchen – All RVers love to eat, and I am blessed to be married to the best cook on the road. Now you all can be blessed as well, since Terry has published a book full of our favorite recipes.

111 Ways to Get the Biggest Bang From Your RV Lifestyle Buck – Bob Difley is another longtime RV author and columnist with a ton of experience to share. This book will show you how to save money and enjoy your travels on any budget.

50 Ideas To Help Keep Your RV Organized, Clean, and Decluttered – Brenda Speidel and her husband Ron have presented seminars on making the most of your RV’s storage capabilities to stay organized and stop that endless searching for what you need, when you need it. This neat little guide includes all of their best tips and tricks.

Meandering Down The Highway – This was my first RV book, the story of how Terry and I traded our workaholic lifestyle for life on the road, our adventures, the many wonderful places we saw and people we met, and how we overcame a terrible setback early in our travels.

The RV Book – Mark Polk, author and producer of America’s most highly regarded RV training series, tells you everything you need to know before you buy your RV and everything you need to know after the purchase.
