And it’s the best kind of company there is! My cousin Berni Frees and her husband Rocky are two of our favorite people in the world, and we always love spending time with them when we visit them at their home in Muskegon, Michigan. They decided it was time to get out of the 18° weather up there and come see our new place in Florida. How cool is that?
They left mid-afternoon on Friday and said they planned to take turns driving the 1260 miles to get here by Saturday (yesterday). We expected that they would roll in sometime yesterday evening, but they made fantastic time and arrived here at 10 o’clock in the morning! Rocky said that except for a couple of pit stops, and stopping to get a bite to eat, they drove straight through.
We enjoyed showing them our new house, then took them over to New Smyrna Beach and drove down the beach for a half mile or so before making a U-turn and coming back. This is one of the few places in the country where you can drive on the beach.
It was a windy day and the surf was rolling in.
When we left the beach we stopped at Beef O’Brady’s to get something to eat, then went back to our place, where Rocky and Berni took much deserved naps. I remember when making marathon driving trips like that was a piece of cake, but at our age things are a little bit different.
Once they woke up we went down to our fishing pier and I showed them how to use my Fitec EZ-Throw cast net. This thing really lives up to its name. It was only the second time I have used it and I’m surprised at just how simple it is. With just a little bit of practice I think anybody can learn how to throw it properly.
Rocky watched me throw it a few times and then gave it a try. He did pretty good!
I caught a pair of little baitfish a couple of inches long, and also this flounder. Everything went back into the water after we took pictures of them.
I don’t know anybody who doesn’t like pelicans, and Berni was glad to see these guys hanging around.
They also got to see some of our resident dolphins swimming by and putting on a show for us. I think Rocky and Berni like it here, and we are looking forward to showing them some more of the sites in the next few days.
