Hunkering Down

I have not had a drink of alcohol for over 40 years, it’s just not my thing and my stomach doesn’t handle it well, but I once had a friend who enjoyed an evening out bar hopping. At least once a week you could find him someplace playing pool and having a few drinks. But he never left home on New Year’s Eve. He always said that was Amateurs’ Night and those fools could kill you on the drive home!

Terry and I are kind of like that about holidays. As fulltime RVers, we learned in our first year on the road to find an RV park to hunker down in a few days before a major holiday, and to stay there until all of the weekend warriors had their fun and went back to the real world.

That’s what we’re doing right now, here at the Daytona Beach RV Resort. Besides all of the holiday revelers that will be going to the beach, the Country 500 Country Music Fest is taking place at the Daytona International Speedway just a few miles from where we are. The entertainment lineup includes Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, Kid Rock, Lady Antebellum, Willie Nelson and 40 other stars. The local news says they expect a crowd of at least 25,000 people. No thanks, we’ve got plenty to do here at home to keep us busy and out of trouble.

So we spent yesterday running errands and getting prepared; dropping off some orders at the post office, making a bank deposit, and stocking up on groceries at Publix. Now we’re good to go and don’t have to leave the house until the holiday is over.

When we got back home we had company. This little guy was hunkering down next to one of our motorhome’s tires. I don’t know if he plans to hang out here for the weekend, but he is certainly welcome if he wants to.

I’m real close to the end of my new book Return to Dog’s Run, and I’m pretty sure I’ll have it done by the end of this weekend. Another reason to hunker down for a few days.

Have you entered our latest Free Drawing yet? This week’s prize is an audiobook of Sneak Thief, the fourth book in my friend Carol Ann Newsome’s excellent Dog Park mystery series. To enter, all you have to do is click on this Free Drawing link or the tab at the top of this page and enter your name in the comments section at the bottom of that page (not this one). Only one entry per person per drawing please, and you must enter with your real name. To prevent spam or multiple entries, the names of cartoon or movie characters are not allowed. The winner will be drawn Sunday evening.

Thought For The Day – The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength or a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

  1. The only problem is trying to find a place to hunker down.

  2. I see storms on the horizon, and not just the country music kind. Hunker and stay safe!! Say hello to the bunny for me!!
