Nick’s In Arizona

I had no idea that writing about how cold it was here in Apache Junction in yesterday’s blog would lead to a financial opportunity, but as it turns out, it has. People in Arizona are taking up a collection to pay me to get the hell out of the state, while the people in Florida have started a Go Fund Me page to convince me to stay where I’m at. So looks like my future is for sale to the highest bidder.

But it’s not just cold here in the Valley of the Sun. Oh no, my powers are statewide! This is the thermometer on my daughter’s car yesterday morning, up in our old hometown of Show Low, in the White Mountains.

And here is a screenshot from the news last night about temperatures in Flagstaff. You read that right, minus 14 degrees. I expect a rather large check from the folks in the northern part of the state to help finance my trip back east.

We did brave the chill yesterday to run some errands and to stop at Terry’s parents house to pick up a couple of packages that we had sent there. Terry was hungry for Mexican food, and there is a restaurant called Elvira’s on Apache Trail that she used to like years ago, so we decided to stop there for dinner. Terry said that the chili sauce and the pico de gallo that came with our complementary chips were very good, but the food itself was a bit of a disappointment. Since I don’t do Mexican food, I had a cheeseburger, and what I ate of it was pretty good. Since I got out of the hospital, my appetite is not what it used to be, and I seldom clean my plate anymore.

The good part of that is I have lost over 30 pounds. If I lose another hundred or so I’ll just be chubby. The bad part is, I may have to spend some money on some new clothes before too long. I look like some of the kids that wear those big baggy jeans around. I’m rather proud of the fact that I haven’t had a Pepsi in over a month, while I used to drink several a day. And surprisingly, I don’t miss it at all.

It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time to kick off a new Free Drawing. This week’s prize is an audiobook of Gun Shy, the fifth book in my friend Ben Rehder’s excellent Blanco County, Texas mystery series. To enter, all you have to do is click on this Free Drawing link or the tab at the top of this page and enter your name in the comments section at the bottom of that page (not this one). Only one entry per person per drawing please, and you must enter with your real name. To prevent spam or multiple entries, the names of cartoon or movie characters are not allowed. The winner will be drawn Sunday evening.

  1. You gave me a chuckle this morning. Thanks for changing my outlook for the day. I woke up late, since it was so dang cold last night, I woke several times during the night to adjust the heat in my Coach. Either too hot or to cold!

  2. Puts these 45 degree mornings in Palm Springs in perspective! 😉

  3. That was a good chuckle
If I only had a computer I would contribute to your staying in Arizona go-fun,, me account
The beauty of you being out there we don’t have to do any icefishing this year
It did get cold last night it was 66 With today being 79

I’m going to contribute to the FPL ( Florida power and light )fund and turn my air conditioning on

  4. Where can I send my check? I’m emailing you a photo of my back yard showing my cactus and palm bundled up against the cold.

  5. It’s cold enough here, so please, don’t consider coming to NE. 🙂

Just not drinking soda can do wonders for your diet. All those empty calories and all that high fructose corn syrup isn’t good for anybody.

  6. Congratulation on your weight loss. Sorry that you had to “hit the wall” sort of for your system to shake up your taste buds and your habits but…..it improves your chances of being around: writing, chasing kites, paddling kayaks and loving Terry for more years. (I almost wrote loving kites and chasing Terry but I really don’t know you that well and anyway what we do know is that Terry’s in charge!) 🙂
