Between uncooperative weather, catching up on chores around the motorhome, and being busy with writing projects, it been so long since we’ve been flying that I was going through withdrawals.
We tried Thursday afternoon, but when we got down to the beach about 4 o’clock, the wind was blowing so hard that it wouldn’t have been much fun. I stuck my WeatherFlow wind meter in my phone and it was showing 19 miles per hour. So we decided to try again another day. And yesterday was the day.
We got down to the beach about 3 PM and the wind was around 13 – 15 miles per hour just about perfect for flying our vented Revolution kites. You can drive on the beach here, so instead of lugging our kite bag and everything else across the sand, we just drove out a ways and parked. That sure was convenient!
About the time I finished setting my kite up, John Barresi came along to say hello to us. John is a world champion kite flyer and is holding a Revolution flying workshop here at Long Beach this weekend. We chatted for a few minutes and he was gracious enough to give me a couple of tips for flying and hovering my Rev in the inverted position. Thanks a lot John, I always appreciate learning from the master!
It was very foggy and there weren’t many people on the beach, so it seemed like we had the place all to ourselves. Terry and I are both getting a lot better with every outing as we get more familiar with the maneuvers necessary to put our quad line kites through their paces. We flew for about two and half hours, until it got too cold to stay out any longer. This afternoon we may meet up with some other Rev flyers who are here in town.
Before we became fulltime RVers I was into classic cars and owned four, so I have been having a lot of fun drooling over all of the hot rods and classics here in town for the big car show this weekend. Everywhere you look there are eye-catching rides.
Folks were lined up along the sidewalks downtown yesterday afternoon watching the informal parade as car after car rolled on past.
Of course, I can remember the day when a lot of these weren’t classics at all, just everyday drivers.
Several people in town for the car show are staying here at the Long Beach Thousand Trails preserve, and this nice 56 Chevy (top), red Super Sport convertible (center), and 57 Chevy (bottom) are all parked at the campground.
