Jun 202014

Even though our life on wheels seems like a permanent vacation, every once in a while we want a break from the routine. So we’re going on vacation this weekend.

We’re going to Muskegon, Michigan to hang out with my cousin Berni Frees and her hubby Rocky for a couple of days. They are two of our favorite people in the world and we always have a great time whenever we get together, with lots of laughter and nonsense.

Located on Lake Michigan, Muskegon is a cool town with lots to see and do and it’s easy to see why Berni and Rocky love living there. I couldn’t handle it in the wintertime but the rest of the year it’s a good place to be if you like fishing and water sports. I may drag Rocky down to the beach and let him try my Prism Snapshot 1.9 speed foil kite if the wind cooperates while we’re there. I know he’ll like it.

When we get back on Monday I have to chain myself to my desk to finish the next issue of the Gypsy Journal and get it to the printer by the end of the week.

For a while now I’ve thought about getting a dashboard camera to record our trips. I looked at one a vendor was selling at the FMCA/Fleetwood rally last week but when I checked it out online the reviews weren’t very impressive. Then I found this HP F210, which looks pretty impressive. With a 32GB memory card it can record up to ten continuous hours. Do any of you have a dash cam, and if so, what do you have? Pros and cons?

This week’s Free Drawing has already set a record! So far, over 270 people have entered to win a personally autographed copy of Miss Terry’s Kitchen by my beautiful and talented wife. Anyone who has ever read the Gypsy Journal knows about Terry’s reputation as a fantastic cook, and if you have ever sampled any of her goodies, you know that reputation is well deserved. All you have to do is click on the Free Drawing link and enter your name in the comments section at the bottom of that page (not this one). Only one entry per person per drawing please, and you must enter with your real name. To prevent spam or multiple entries, the names of cartoon or movie characters are not allowed. The winner will be drawn Sunday evening.

And while we’re on the subject of books, fulltime RVer Judy Howard, author of the popular COAST TO COAST WITH A CAT AND A GHOST and Going Home With A Cat And A Ghost has just released a new book that’s sure to be a hit. Check out Masada’s Marine: The Story of a Service Dog and her Wounded Marine Warrior.

Thought For The Day – The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts and the stupid ones are full of confidence.

  1. Nick,

I have a Brinno TLC200 Pro. Works great. Simple to program. Very common to find at construction sites for time lapse as the building is being built.

  2. The stupid people are sure you are wrong about the TFTD.

  3. Nick we use a dash cam sold by a company called windshieldwitness.com. For the price, the HP looks like a pretty good deal. Our unit does not have the GPS capability, but the ease of use and picture quality is excellent. We also have a 32 gb card and our camera will record in the same resolution, but will record only about 7 hours tops. I’d bet that claim of 10 hours on the HP is at a lower 720 resolution. I would definitely want the highest resolution possible for later viewing.
Contact me if you want to discuss further.

  4. Nick,

There is an app called DailyRoads Voyager for Android that is a very good Dash Cam. Just get a good docking mount for your phone. I use the iBolt for my S3. Not sure on the S5.

  5. I picked up a roadmate dvr at the Tampa 2014 rv show lasted 60 day 130$$ down the drain
Look in to a go-pro hero with waterproof case AND you can mount it to your kayak
    And your kites
there like a timex watch they keeps on ticking

  6. Hi Nick,

I bought this for my wife:

It’s cheaper, but has worked perfectly for the past few months. Daytime video quality is excellent, nighttime is fair. It doesn’t come with an SD card, so make sure to get a Class 10, 8gb or higher.
