The question for today is, what’s the point of being an early bird if you don’t like worms? It makes no sense to me. But we were up before 7 a.m. again yesterday. And yes, I know I’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it again. Mornings suck.

Now don’t all of you early risers start telling me how glorious the sunrise is and how invigorated you feel being up and starting your day before the rest of the world. You’re too darned bleary eyed to actually see the sunrise and so sleep deprived you have a false sense of nirvana. Kind of like people freezing to death who suddenly feel warm and cozy just before the end.

At least we had a reason to be up so early; Miss Terry and cousin Beverly had medical appointments on the northwest side of town, starting at 9:20 a.m. Since we had to pick up Beverly first, then drive across town, we wanted to give ourselves plenty of time. As it turns out, we needed it.

There was an accident on the Interstate 10 overpass and traffic was being diverted onto the eastbound lanes of the highway, where it was backed way up and barely creeping along. I managed to get us turned around and headed back in the right direction, and we picked Beverly up and made it to the doctor’s office with about two minutes to spare.

Actually, their appointments were with a Nurse Practitioner named Dottie Tucker who works in the doctor’s office. Beverly has been seeing her for several years but this was Terry’s first time and they made an immediate strong connection. Dotty and her husband are new RVers and after the appointments were finished she came out to the lobby to meet me and we had a very nice chat. It took me about 30 seconds to understand why Beverly and Terry liked her. She’s one of those very special people that the world needs a lot more of.

When we left the doctor’s office we stopped to visit with another cousin, Vivian Leve and her husband Bob. We have not seen them in a couple of years so it was nice to spend some time with them and catch up on all of the news about their kids and grandkids.

The next stop on our itinerary was Luke’s on Fort Lowell Road for some of their delicious Italian beef sandwiches and their awesome French fries. This was a favorite of mine back when I lived in Tucson years ago and I never visit town without eating at Luke’s at least once.

We stopped at WalMart so Beverly could drop off a prescription, then went back to her apartment where I took a nap while Terry cut Beverly’s hair. Well, I should say I tried to take a nap. Beverly has the most uncomfortable couch ever known to mankind. I think it was actually a medieval torture device that she found in a dumpster after the Renaissance Festival.

Back at home, I caught up on a huge backlog of e-mail that had come in during the day, spent some time researching life in post-World War II America for my current book, and even managed to give Miss Terry a foot rub. A pleasant end to a day that started way too early.

  1. You think you got trouble. The Hall of Fame hosted an RV industry breakfast for 450 executives at 7:00 yesterday – guess who opened up for the caterer at 5:00AM That’s not got out of bed but opened the conference center. 7:00 is sleepin in

  2. I propose that we late sleepers apply for status as an official minority group. We could call ourselves alternatively circadianly rythmed, ACR for short. After all, we have been oppressed, repressed, and depressed by those arrogant early risers since the beginning of time.

Think of it! ACR’s unite! We could apply for benefits and reparations to right past wrongs. We could lobby Congress to make it illegal to schedule us for early appointments or meetings. It could become politically incorrect to scold ACR’s for being late.

Now, if only we could get up early enough to accomplish all this.
