Off To See The Dentist

One of the bad side effects of the harsh regime of chemo and radiation it took to save Terry’s life after her cancer diagnosis twelve years ago is that it took a toll on her body. One side effect was a lot of damage to her teeth, which she had always been very careful to take care of.

A few years ago, after hearing about the good deals to be had on dental work in Mexico, Terry went to the Valenzuela Group in Algodones after getting a good reference from RVing friends.

At first we were very pleased with the results, but that didn’t last long. They took care of a lot of the cosmetic issues, but didn’t address any of the underlying problems, like they had promised to. Within a couple of weeks one of the veneers came off and we had to go back and get it replaced, but only after arguing with them about it. Veneers shouldn’t come off if you get them done by a good cosmetic dentist. Since then that veneer and another have come off, and she has had other dental problems that resulted from or were aggravated by the Mexican dental work. We know some folks who have had good results in Mexico for dental work, but we really regret our decision to go there. There are plenty of fantastic dental services abroad you just have to make sure you’re picking the right one for your needs.

Our mobile lifestyle makes it hard to establish a relationship with professionals when we don’t know anybody in an area to get references from, but after a lot of of online research Terry found a dentist she is comfortable with in Orlando, and had her first appointment yesterday. She was in with Doctor Hajek for well over an hour and came away with a very good feeling about her and they are working on a plan to get her issues resolved. We had planned to head for Arizona about mid-February, but that’s up in the air until we get a timeline for the dental stuff. We may end up hanging around Florida for a few weeks longer.

Remember the other day when I said the Verizon internet service here at Three Flags RV Resort in Wildwood was a lot better than at the Orlando Thousand Trails? That was until last night when it slowed down to sludge. Oh well, what can I say?

The rain started yesterday afternoon and the temperature dropped, and it looks like it’s going to stay that way for a few days. Good writing weather. Good snuggling weather too! Our heat pump is getting a good workout.

Tomorrow we are going down to St. Petersburg for our annual reunion with my nephews, niece, and their families. We’re looking forward to seeing everybody again. They always make us feel so welcome. Of course, it does feel strange when adults call me Uncle Nick.

  1. Nick, although the rates customers pay ISPs in the U.S. are the highest in the world, and the profits made by ISPs in the U.S. are the highest in the world, The U.S. currently ranks # 29 (and falling) in internet connectivity capability, according to David Cay Johnston, author of “The Fine Print”. Also published in 2012 is “Who Stole the American Dream?”, by Hedrick Smith.

  2. Just wanted to let you know that Florida is not the only warm state that is having miserably cold weather, yesterday here in Hondo and the surrounding area we got sleet and are you ready for this, snow flurries, the snow part did not last long, thank heavens, but the rain and sleet is still coming down. Reason we moved here to this part of TX it is supposed to be warm even in the winter. Happy to hear Terry is getting good dental work at last. I also need some work but with no insurance it is a matter of having to save the money.

  3. We are in the same situation, Elaine, as far as insurance. But we do what we need to do, and cut corners elsewhere if needed.

  4. Costco Executive Members in CA can sign up for their group dental plan (Delta Dental). My husband needed extensive work, and it saved us 50%. There’s also their Business Health & Dental program in CA, OR and WA. I don’t know if their Aetna health insurance program covers dental, or which states are covered, but anybody interested could click on their “services” button and look into it.
