No Excuses

There’s a funny saying going around on Facebook that says “Every day, I wake up and tell myself that I have a lot to accomplish and I’m going to get busy and work hard all day long. Then myself and I laugh and roll over and go back to sleep.”

That’s how it was for me yesterday. I have no excuse for not doing a darned thing yesterday, unless laziness is an acceptable excuse. I planned to get some work done. I wanted to. But I didn’t.

We woke up to a cold, wet, dreary day, a perfect day to wear warm sweats, drink cappuccino, and check my e-mail. And browse the internet. And watch an old movie on television. I had not seen American Graffiti in years, and it was just as good as I remembered. I love all those neat old cars and the music! Were any of us ever that innocent?

I blame Miss Terry for part of my failure to accomplish anything. Instead of kicking me in my portly posterior and telling me to get busy, she said it’s okay to take a day off now and then. Giving a slacker like me an excuse not to work is akin to handing an alcoholic a beer, or lighting a cigarette in the face of somebody who’s trying to quit smoking. I’ll take any excuse to backslide (as you just read).

Finally, sometime in the late afternoon I did write a new self-publishing blog titled Is Amazon Killing The Golden Goose? that e-book readers or prospective authors might find interesting. Check it out and leave a comment.

Speaking of e-books and publishing, my Facebook authors group is starting a program to promote books by members of the group. Once a week we’ll be sharing information on two selected authors, and for the first promotion today, those authors will be myself and my friend Bobbi Johnson Holmes. Bobbi writes under a couple of pen names, one of which is Anna J. McIntyre. If you like reading romances, check out Lessons, the first book in her Coulson Series. And do me a favor, will you? If you know somebody who might enjoy Lessons, tell them about it. Bobbi also publishes an interesting blog called Mid-Journey that you might enjoy.

While I may have spent the day taking up space and using up oxygen without giving anything back to the world, Miss Terry was hard at work organizing some of her recipe files, doing some laundry, and baking a delicious batch of brownies to take to my family reunion today. That lady never stops.

The only thing that made me feel better about being so lazy was learning that I’m not alone. I called Greg White over in Texas and offered him a two-fer. I told Greg if he’d come to Florida and put the new start-up capacitor in our basement air conditioner, I’d also let him fix the leak in our Splendide washer/dryer combo. Can you believe he passed that opportunity up? Some people just don’t appreciate anything you do for them!

  1. Maybe if you make it a three-fer he won’t be able to resist!

  2. Nick, does Terry use a computer to organize her recipes, or paper in a notebook or filing box?

  3. Charley, she has had a recipe box since she was in her 20s, but she is in the process of putting everything in the computer.

  4. Just out of curiosity, which program is she using? Thanks.

  5. Charley,
She just types them into Microsoft Word.
